Buyer surge as Perth becomes most Googled

Perth is the most Googled Australian city for prospective homebuyers and buyer activity is tracking 40 per cent higher than at the same time last year.

The Real Estate Institute of WA (reports that nearly half of Perth’s suburbs recorded price growth in August and listings are continuing to tighten across all property types.

Search engine optimisation expert Olga Andrienko said an analysis of Google property searches by showed “houses for sale Perth” had the highest number of searches nationally since the start of the year.

“The data indicates a significant interest in Perth, with national property searches clearly showing all eyes are on the capital city’s housing market,” the global head of digital marketing agency SEMrush said. “Perth had the highest average number of property searches of all of the capital cities closely followed by Brisbane, indicating a higher demand to purchase property in WA compared to other states.”

The data showed buyer preference was still predominantly for the traditional Perth housing, with 241 per cent more searches than people looking for apartments. The least popular Google was for townhouses.

Jones and Co director Kelly Jones said the surge in demand was starting to push prices up in many suburbs.

Kelly said the interstate interest in Perth property had also intensified in recent weeks.

“These conditions are translating into an increasingly competitive market and we are seeing buyers compete for a much smaller pool of properties,” she said. “A lot of the interest has been from owner-occupiers and first home buyers, but investors are starting to show a lot of interest.”

The number of properties for sale is also tightening, with the 10,686 listings this week – that’s down 23 per cent from the same time last year.

Kelly said there was considerable interest for properties for sale in Bassendean.

“Prospective buyers are chasing family homes on big blocks and renos on subdivided blocks are also highly sought after,” Kelly said.
